Chamaerops Humilis
Also known as palmito, margallon, palmetto, European palmetto, dog dates, broom palm or palm, it belongs to the family of the Arecaceae (formerly Palmaceae) and its origin is Mediterranean. The name chamaerops humilis means small or humble thicket, and it grows in arid and dry regions, generally near the coast, in North Africa, southern Italy, Spain and islands of the western Mediterranean. It is one of the native palms of Europe and represents one of the most representative elements of the Mediterranean vegetation of our continent. It has a bushy bearing not generally exceeding two meters in height, it is slow growing. The heart or bud is tender and edible, its leaves are used in basketry or to make brooms. It appears cultivated quite frequently in parks and public walks, also in gardens, making it very attractive to decorate patios and terraces. Both in the sun and in the shade, it holds the cold well, although it prefers warm and temperate climates, well resisting the wind and the salinity of the sea.
