Yucca Elephantipes

    Yucca Elephantipes

The Yucca Elephantipes, or elephant’s foot, is native to Central and South America. The name elephant leg is due to the usually present thickening at the bottom of the trunk, these thickenings are often gigantic in Mediterranean countries where the yuccas grow into real trees. The plant is easy to maintain, provided it receives sufficient ventilation and sunlight.

Make sure that the Yucca always gets enough water in the summer, without the root ball in the water. In winter, watering only takes place every 10 to 14 days. The plant likes to be regularly sprayed, by moistening the leaves, they are therefore cleaned of dust. The Yucca likes to have a little fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks, which can be liquid.
In summer, the plant can easily go outside, making it a real patio, tub and patio plant. Due to the slow growth rate of 15 to 20 cm per year, the larger plants are often expensive to purchase.
The Yucca Elephantipes has no spiky thorns, making it more common as an ornamental plant than other species. It reaches a height of 10 m, with simple or branched stems thickened at the base. The leaves are elongated, 50 to 100 cm long and 5 to 7 cm wide and the edges are slightly serrated. Inflorescences are leafy panicles with bell-shaped, white or cream flowers.
